Delta Omicron Alumni Concert held in Pottle

Nothing is better than hearing some good old, hard earned musical talent.

The Delta Omicron Alumni Concert of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts was held on Thursday, Mar. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Pottle Auditorium. The concert showcased some of the chapter’s own graduates.

The concert was constructed with four main musical pieces; “Cadencia” performed by soprano vocalist Jessica Bryan and guitarist David Bryan, “St. Louis Blues” performed by saxophonist Suzy Runnels, “O Mio Babbino Caro” performed by soprano vocalist Wendy Savarino and “Chatterbox” performed by hand percussionist Travis Henthorn.

This concert is fairly new to our campus. The first event took place in the fall semester of August 2015. Chapter President Katie Walker started this event. Walker’s goal was to help encourage members and students participating to keep up with and be proud of their musical talents while raising awareness of the chapter.

The event had a successful turnout and members of the Alumni chapter invite all students and members to attend the event in the future.

“We look forward to more events and we want to try and get more students to come and support this free event,” said vice president of Delta Omicron Nicholas Smith.

The Alumni Chapter is also encouraging any musicians to join and participate in concerts and fundraising events.

“I loved it, it is really cool finding a community of people as enthusiastic as myself,” said junior music performance major piano performer, Regan Adcock. “I love the experience of having a family without any bias or judgment because anyone can join. I encourage anyone with any musical interest to try it. You may not be the best, but the family you earn in the chapter will be with you forever.”

According to Walker, at the end of April, the alumni will continue raising awareness of their chapter. The students will be setting up a table selling baked goods such as cookies and cakes to raise funds for local schools in the area.

“Every year the chapter selects one school to help raise money for their music department,” said Walker.

This year the fundraiser proceeds go to Henny Mayfield Elementary located in Slidell for their music department. The bake sales have raised over 200 dollars toward the school and will not stop fundraising until the end of the semester.
