The annual Flute Studio Recital brought harmonious tones to Pottle Auditorium.

Last Tuesday, Apr. 5, at 7:30 p.m. the music department hosted the Flute Studio Recital. Directed by fine and performing arts professor Shanna Drescher and pianist Mary Bresowar, it consisted of seven major songs.

Sonata in D Major was played by flutists Missy Massey, Abbie Stevenson and Ashley Wolfe. Flutist Maryssa Chartier performed “Suite de Trois Morceaux.” Flutist Caroline Wright performed “Sonata for in a minor for solo flute.” Flutist Andres Chavez performed “Sonatine.” Flutist Taylor Garrett performed “Concerto for Flute and Piano.”  Flutist Jordan Bergerson performed “Sonata for Flute and Piano.” “Tico Tico no Fuba” was performed by the university’s Flute Choir.

This past year was the first year that Drescher has been a part of the university.

“This is my first year here teaching at Southeastern,” said Drescher. “I wanted to create the opportunity for my students to share their hard work each semester and share what they can do with each other and their guests. This recital has been a great way to show progress of the flute students throughout the semester.”

This event was a huge success according to the musicians and the audience.

“This was my first solo performance,” said music education major freshman Jordan Bergeron. “At first I was nervous, but once I stepped on the stage and started playing, my confidence grew and the better I felt myself perform. I have been playing the flute for about six years and I intend on continuing through my schooling.”

Another performer also felt it was a great opportunity to play on stage.

“It was a neat experience being able to play on stage with my fellow classmates,” said freshman music education major Ashley Wolfe. “It was a lot of fun. I am really passionate about music and my first year here at Southeastern has been great. Being in the music program has taught me a lot and I feel like I have progressed in my music skills. I hope to further my degree with music therapy, I feel using music therapy will give me the chance of working with children and making them feel great and happy with music.”

Senior vocal music education major Michelle Guillot was a guest at this event.

“My favorite piece had to be ‘Tico Tico no Fuba,’ ” said Guillot. “I loved it because as a vocalist, I was able to see similarities in the piece between a vocalist performance and a choir of flutes. You get the same feeling when you have a group of great musicians all playing at once. Overall the performance was a great variety of old and new songs.”

Performing with the Wind Symphony, the Flute Studio’s upcoming show is located at the Columbia Theatre on Apr. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
