The trumpets will go silent for Donald Trump

    Heather Jewell's Headshot

He is known by many names and phrases, some less flattering than others, like: The Don, The Donald, DJT, The Trumpster and a personal favorite of mine, Orange Man. Whatever you call him, I’m sure the image of 2016 Presidential Candidate Donald Trump came to mind after reading this first sentence.

Famously quoted for saying, “Money was never a big motivation for me except as a way to keep score. The real excitement is playing the game.” When does the game give way to reality? I’ll try not to bore you by listing every reason I am against this man becoming our next president, instead I’m going to focus on just two: his behaviors are contradictory to how a leader should act and his distasteful remarks towards women, including his own daughters. His actions show immaturity and callousness.

Let’s begin with a Trump statement on Sunday, October 4, when he said that he would leave the race if his poll numbers began to plummet. When someone as passionate as Trump stated he would leave if his polls faltered, it showed that he is a man more concerned about saving face rather than leading the American people. He has painted the image of himself tucking back home and getting on with his life. He does not possess the qualities needed to be a good, diplomatic leader with his “my way or the highway” attitude and will not be fruitful while dealing with foreign affairs either.

The way he speaks about women is also troublesome to me. Many of Trump’s targets have been successful women, and his lack of professionalism and desire to be “transparent” often results in him being outright disrespectful. On April 16, Trump tweeted: “If Hillary Clinton can’t satisfy her husband, what makes her think she can satisfy America?”

And let’s not forget the time he whined about Fox News’ Megyn Kelly calling him out on his behavior during the GOP debate on August 6. His response was to call a woman with a law degree a “bimbo” and shrug off the inquiry. Over 50 percent of Americans are women; the question had relevance because whether or not he wants to acknowledge it, women are voting and we want to know why he thought we should give him our vote, despite his comments.

The Trump Train may be going full speed ahead, but it is my belief that from this point on, his polls will decrease. The Republican Party is spread thin and is divided right now over the dozen or so hopefuls. When listening to so many people at once, the louder ones will be heard and Trump has made sure he was. Say Trump makes it to the primaries, once many of the other voices are silenced it will be likely many voters will then be able to listen to more than what he has to say. All those divided voters would stand behind his opponent and even some of his own voters could change sides. However, just as likely as that is to happen, it could also be the other way around.

Despite my disagreements with the things listed and not (like his pitch for a giant, giant wall along the Mexican border) the Trumptastrophe managed to appeal to me just once after an interview he had with CNN’s Chris Cuomo. During this interview he was asked about his thoughts on the murder of a news reporter and camera man at the end of August and stated: “This isn’t a gun problem, this is a mental problem. It’s not a question of the laws, it’s really the people.” I stand behind our second amendment one hundred percent and thanks to my father, can efficiently clean, load and yes, take aim and fire a gun all the while being aware of my surroundings and following safety rules. Growing up on a ranch I’ll admit it was very unlikely we would be attacked by another person, however the snakes and coyotes surrounding our home didn’t feel the same reservations. I stand with Trump when he says that instead of trying to take away Americans’ guns, we should instead be devoting more time to identify and help those with mental illnesses or abnormalities. These people maintain the same dignity as anyone else and as such should be given the care they need. You wouldn’t try to give someone with an open wound Aloe Vera and mental illnesses should not be treated wrongly either.

All in all, our 2016 election is shaping up to be one for the books. Thankfully though, if your choice candidate isn’t our next Prez, there is always Kanye West running in 2020 to look forward to.
