Never ending battle of Batman and Superman

    William Schmidt's Headshot

Since the dawn of the consumption of Batman and Superman, the debate between who would win in battle has commenced. And just as each day ends with the night, at the end of the day Batman will be there when Superman loses.

One reason Batman will win is because he had to conquer a childhood with the loss of his parents. Yes, Superman may have lost his planet, but he was a newborn at the time. Superman got lucky and had the “picture-perfect” family raise him as their own and accept him as he was. Bruce Wayne, who would become Batman, saw his parents murdered right in front of him, and though Alfred was there as a “father” figure, seeing one’s parents die in front of them will leave a lasting scar.

Millionaire Bruce Wayne could have done anything with his inheritance after seeing his parents’ death. But did he?  No, rather, he put that money to good use and grew up to be the person that would defend his city from some of the worst criminal masterminds, with ordinary human abilities. When Superman loses his powers, he doesn’t even know how to take care of himself. Batman doesn’t have other-world powers to rely on. He uses his normal, human skills as well as utilizing the most important tool, his mind.

To those who say that it would be impossible to stand-up to the super speed, super strength, et cetera. All Batman needs is some Kryptonite. And, Batman is much smarter than Lex Luthor. Batman won’t wear it as a necklace that will break, or only carry it; he will find a way to build it into his costume and utilize it as a belt or something of the like when he is not wearing his mask. Some may say the radiation from the Kryptonite will slowly kill Batman. I would think Batman would be smart enough to take that into consideration. He isn’t like the Power Rangers who rely on new Zords when they are about to lose a battle. Batman has thought ahead. He will have a way to combat the radiation leak. Batman is not only three steps ahead in the game of chess, he already sees the ending. I mean he had shark repellent spray ready for the random time a shark bit his leg. Would Superman think that, “One day I may need shark repellent spray because I may lose my powers and a shark could attack.” Of course he wouldn’t, he is only thinking of the moment unlike Batman.

I could go on and on in all the ways Batman would defeat Superman, but I’ll leave it with one final point: The emotional weakness of Superman. Superman will go above and beyond to save the innocent, but he lets the personal emotions of those who he loves get in the way. Superman has become soft in becoming human. Though it would crush Batman, he would let his allies fall if need be in combat and as the Convergence comics showed, Superman dies in every multiverse, save one, to help those who he knows whereas Batman will mourn in the darkness but know that humanity shall live to see another day.

If Superman was to become a god, gods fall and Batman will find a way to rise from the ashes and defeat Superman, showing the world that mere mortals can defeat a god.

Editor’s Note: The Editor in Chief and Opinions Editor hold different views on the battle between Superman and Batman; however both editors agree that “Batman v Superman: Dawn of the Justice” movie
coming out next semester will not do justice for either character. The previews show that Superman is willing to destroy entire cities which take away from his original nature, and the character of Batman will be
poorly portrayed along with the issue of trying to jam too many characters in one movie, even if they are trying to take the Justice League route.
