    A night of diversity

Students from different majors and people from different ethnic backgrounds came together to taste the delicacies of foreign food and watch as performers sang, danced and acted out skits in different languages. The Department of Languages and Communications hosted their annual International Night Monday, Nov. 12 in the Student Union Ballroom with the Office of Multicultural and International Student Affairs, SLU International and Foreign Language Students and Faculty, Student Development and Aramark as sponsors.
“It’s a very fun night and not only do they feed you but they also provide you with entertainment,” said Cody Sires, a senior communications major and member of the Italian club. “It’s just a night for people of all ethnicities and backgrounds to come together and celebrate diversity.”
Aramark provided food that was free for any attendee.  The buffet table included Greek salad, stuffed shells, enchiladas, curry chicken, beef burgundy with rice, couscous and fruit trays.
“We tried to pick something from each different country,” said Sena Gulotta, Aramark’s catering manager.
After everyone filled up on their selection of food, Mandeville Junior High French club took the stage performing a skit directed by Louise Zollinger, entitled “La Meilleure du Monde.”
Hammond Junior High Magnet seventh grade class followed performing a Spanish rap entitled “Los Articulos Definidos,” directed by Spanish language teacher Maria Tapia.
Andreina Colina wowed the audience as she performed an Italian song, “O Mio Babbino Caro” by Giancomo Puccini and performed a Flamenco dance to “Sarandonga” by Lola Flores.
Courtney Lowe performed an Italian song entitled “Se Tu m’ ami, Se Sospiri” by Alessandro Parisotti.
Bridget Lyons performed an Italian song entitled “La Conocchia” by Donzetti.
Charles, Carley and Hannah Furlan came together as a family to perform a Spanish song entitled “Y No Estabas Tu.”
The La La Tribal danced to “Walk like an Egyptian Remix” by Cleopatra and Hakim.
Tyler Lange sang the French song “Ouvre Ton Coeur” by George Bizet. Brianna Dewar sang the French song “Romance” by Claude Debussy. Jeremy Lloyd performed the German song “Minnelied” by Johannes Brahms.  Catherine Christophe accompanied Lange, Dewar and Lloyd on piano.
Daniel Hildenbrandt and David Ponze closed the performances with an original French song by Daniel Hildenbrandt.
As the applauses ended, prizes were given away to lucky winners who had their name drawn and attendees who correctly answered a question from “Who wants to be an international person?”
The names drawn were a collection of those who donated or inquired about donating to help supplement Study Abroad scholarships. For more information about Study Abroad programs contact the Office of International Initiatives at 985-549-2135.
