Weinstein incident sheds light on a larger issue

New York City police said Friday, Nov. 3, 2017, that an actress’ rape allegations against Weinstein are credible. Actress Paz de la Huerta has publicly accused Weinstein of raping her twice in her apartment in 2010 and called police about it on Oct. 26.  (AP Photo/Michael Sohn, File)

Many people may know someone who has been a victim of sexual harassment or maybe it has even happened to you. Sexual harassment is when someone touches, performs a sexual act or even makes unwanted sexual remarks. Sexual harassment can happen to almost anyone. According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, people at ages 12-34 are at the highest risk for sexual assault and rape. This statistic is important because young people tend to be naïve, don’t expect that kind of thing to happen to them, and think they might be invincible to sexual harassment.

So for those of you who don’t know about the Harvey Weinstein incident, it revolves around a man named Harvey Weinstein, a film producer. This all started when actresses started to come forward about Weinstein sexually harassing them and the women feeling uncomfortable around him. Actresses Rose Mcgowan and Ashley Judd are among some of the women who came forward. According to BBC News some of the accusations stated that he forced women to message him and watch him while he was naked. Weinstein also promised them that he could get them farther in their career for sexual favors in return. Weinstein is acknowledging these accusations by saying that he has caused great pain to everyone. It is taking a leave of absence while also seeking a therapist’s attention.

Weinstein also had accusations from many different age groups of girls, which brings me to my next topic of consent age. If someone is over eighteen and gets involved with someone under the age of 17, it is considered illegal, but I think we can all agree that it is still very creepy when an older man tries to hit on a young girl. In one of the accusations in the Weinstein case, he made an eighteen-year-old girl feel uncomfortable. She was eighteen, but it still doesn’t make it right because she was young. He was much older and knew this was wrong, so I think it’s important to make sure you have consent first before you do anything that can make someone feel uncomfortable.

Most people try to say that the way a girl dresses is her own fault if a guy comes on to her. This topic is brought up anywhere with celebrities and just girls in general.

What you wear or what you do shouldn’t determine if someone has the right to touch or speak to you in any kind of people that you don’t want. All people should understand enough to leave others alone even if what they’re wearing may catch your attention. It never gives anyone the right to sexually harass others.

It is something that can happen to anyone, and people need to be aware that it can happen.

People should be aware of sexual harassment and what can go on in the world to form your own opinion and the precautions you can take to stop yourself from getting into tricky situations
