    NPHC steps up recruitment efforts

The National Pan-Hellenic Council will provide information on the nine fraternities and sororities that make up the council for all students interested in joining.
The informational will take place on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. in Fayard Hall, room 109. No registration is required.
“All that’s asked of you is that you come in business casual attire,” said Kayla Turner, president of the NPHC. “Come with an open mind and curiosity.”
The NPHC is made up of the original nine traditionally African American organizations called the Divine Nine, according to Turner. However, members of any race and nationality may be accepted into any of the organizations.
The fraternities and sororities that will be present include  Alphi Phi Alpha fraternity, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, Delta Sigma Theta sorority, Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, Omega Psi Phi fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, Zeta Phi Beta sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho sorority and Iota Phi Theta fraternity.
Students who would like to join an NPHC organization should prepare by researching each fraternity or sorority and taking the commitment seriously.
“[Students] should do their research about each organization, because each organization is different,” said Turner. “Each organization may have the same founding principles, but they may have different reasons for being founded. They should expect or welcome really eager people who love their organization, and they should know that when it comes to being in the organization, we take it seriously, and it’s not just all fun and games. We put a lot of work and effort into it.”
Turner, a member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority, encourages students to get involved in Greek life in order to achieve full potential in college.
“If it hadn’t been for my sorority, I would not have come out of my shell so much,” said Turner. “I was an outgoing person, but I didn’t want to do anything. But I put forth 110 times more effort in everything that I do now than I did before. Now I have people that I can go to, and I have a community that accepts me for me, not being anybody else. It always feels like I have people I can go to for any problem.”
After the informational, each individual organization will hold an interest meeting for those who wish to join. The times and dates will be posted during the informational.
