    Nu Delta holds ‘May Week’

The Nu Delta chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Southeastern’s oldest African-American sorority, held May Week to reach out to the Southeastern community, spread autism awareness and strengthen the bonds between sorority sisters.
“What we do is celebrate our sorority, and our founders,” said Leshay Taylor, a senior majoring in psychology and new member of Delta Sigma Theta. “We give programs to get people to come out and learn about our [sorority], such as forums that are beneficial to college students, especially college women who are interested in becoming part of our sorority.”
May Week was held from Sunday, April 28 through Saturday, May 4, and included a different event each day. According to Taylor, Nu Delta began May Week last Sunday with  a gospel night titled “SWAT: Service, Worship and Talent.”
“People came out, sang and praised God together,” said Taylor. “[Everyone] showed people their talent and how they use it for the positive, which is to worship God.”
On Monday, the sorority held a hip-hop class called “Fully-Equipped, promoting health and fittness in a creative and fun environment.”
“It teaches you a way to have fun and still work out and be fit,” said Taylor.
The ladies of the Nu Delta chapter spent several hours in the student union on Tuesday for autism awareness and again on Wednesday for a Union Takeover.
“We were in the union for autism awareness,” said Taylor. “We gave people information about it and just educated people in general on autism. For the Union Takeover, we are still giving out the autism information. [On Tuesday] we didn’t get a lot of feedback, so we are doing it today also and just playing music and getting people to come out and just talk to us and learn more.”
The sorority hosted “I’m Possible,” a forum about self-motivation, for anyone on campus on Wednesday night, and a Fashion Show featuring student designers on Thursday night in the Lab School Gym.
“We know a lot of people that started clothing lines that are in college,” said Taylor. “We want to supply the models, and they’re going to model the clothes. Afterwards, they can sell their merchandise and get their name out there with the fashion industry.”
The sorority held a luncheon on Friday to build up the bonds of sisterhood, and they performed community service by cleaning up Crystal Street together on Saturday.
“The young women in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority are very open to the public, and we are educated black women who are very open to inviting people to come speak with us and [we are] open to the community,” said Taylor. “We love doing community service. That’s what we try to do is make [the community] bigger and better every day.”
