SGA to host Bonfire and Block Party Thursday

With Homecoming Week underway, students will have the opportunity to participate in a number of festivities. One event, the Student Government Association (SGA) Block Party, Bonfire and Lip Sync Competition, promises to offer students the opportunity to network with friends and new people in a fun, casual environment.

The Block Party, Bonfire and Lip Sync Competition, being held on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m., is being put on by the SGA as part of the weeklong celebration. It will take place on the University Center Field, which is between the University Center and the Alumni Center on North Campus.

President of the SGA, Luke Holloway, promises the event will provide plenty of opportunities for attendees to have a good time.

“The band is going to be there, Roomie is going to be there, football players are going to be there, coach is going to be there,” said Holloway. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

The event is actually three events rolled into one. The first part is the block party, which features music from Southeastern’s own Spirit of the Southland band and free food provided by the SGA. Another part of the event is the bonfire, which will be the first one held in over two years.

“We’ve planned to have a bonfire every year, but the first year there was a burn ban,” Holloway said. “There’s always been some kind of weather issue. The first year, I want to say it rained non-stop. This year, we are just praying that we actually have a bonfire.”

After the block party and bonfire, the lip sync competition will feature organizations that will be performing a song they have prepared to lip sync for judges. The master of ceremonies for the competition will be Holloway and SGA Chief Justice William Takewell.

“That’s when the lip sync happens, after the block party,” Holloway said. “All the organizations prepare a lip sync thing, and that’s when the judges are out there; it’s a lot of fun.”

Although Holloway was not positive on whom the judges were going to be, he hinted that one of the judges might be a certain school mascot.

“Right now, we’re working on that, getting the judges,” said Holloway. “I’ve heard, through the grapevine that Roomie is going to be out there judging.”

Holloway explained that the biggest change from last year’s version of the Block Party, Bonfire and Lip Sync Competition took place in the planning and executing of the event. Holloway explained that this year the Dream Team, the organization responsible for planning Homecoming, has collaborated with the SGA to execute this year’s events.

“This year, SGA is doing the block party and also is incorporated in the whole Homecoming week,” Holloway said.

Additionally, Holloway expressed his desire for all Southeastern Lions to come out and show their Lion pride at all Homecoming events.

“Come out and have fun, it’s going to be blast. We expect bigger and better things this year,” said Holloway. “We encourage every Southeastern Lion to come out and support their team that week.”

The entire Homecoming week schedule and additional information can be found on the SGA’s webpage at www.selu.edu/sga.
