Over the weekend, the Lady Lions swept Northwestern State to keep the Cypress trophy in Hammond for the fifth consecutive year and tied the school’s record for the longest win streak with their twelfth straight win.
In the early innings of Friday’s first game of the doubleheader, junior infielder Brilee Ford hit her second grand slam of the season, sending SLU into a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
To extend the lead, senior outfielder Colleen Kulivan hit two RBIs alongside graduate outfielder Shenita Tucker, who hit a single, which led graduate outfielder Ka’Lyn Watson on her way to home plate and finished the game with Southeastern ahead of Northwestern State 10-2.
Sophomore infielder Shelby Morris, senior catcher Cydnee Schneider, junior infielder Chloe Magee, and Kulivan all tied for two hits in the first game as well.
In the second game, SLU and NSU were both tied at zero till the fourth inning, when Morris was walked with the bases loaded.
Then, senior infielder Maria Detillier hit her seventh home run of the season to seal the 3-1 victory and take the series.
On Saturday, the Lady Lions evened the score in the bottom of the third inning with a bunt by Tucker before Ford singled freshman outfielder Breezy Pantalion home in the bottom of the fourth inning, leading SLU to secure the lead.
To complete the conference sweep, Southeastern tied the school record with its 12th straight win of the season against Northwestern State on Saturday and looks forward to breaking the record next game.
Before the game, Head Coach Rick Fremin spoke about keeping the intense atmosphere during home games that affects the team’s momentum.
“We’re doing our best to continue to win over the home crowd and continue the momentum we have, especially in conference play; we have a high quality of number of at bats and a team that is resilient, that is something I am really proud of,” Coach Fremin said.
SLU will head back on the road to face UL Monroe on Tuesday, March 24, at 5 p.m. before taking on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for their next conference series on Friday, March 27, at 4 p.m. in Corpus Christi, Texas.
