The women’s basketball team ended its last home game of the season with a 56-60 loss to Northwestern State University.

The Senior Day game was held on March 2 at 1 p.m. in the University Center.

Ayla Guzzardo, head coach of women’s basketball, discussed the team’s preparation for the home contest.

“We practiced each day for about two hours to prepare for the game,” said Guzzardo. “We also watched film of last time we played NSU and watched film of what they are doing now since we played them.”

Charliee Dugas, a junior guard, led the team with 24 points and eight rebounds. Although the match’s outcome was not in the Lady Lions’ favor, Dugas felt proud of the team’s play.

“I see some fight in us that I haven’t seen it a long time,” expressed Dugas. “Towards the end of our games, we haven’t had that. Even though the outcome didn’t come how we wanted it, I still was excited to see how hard we played.”

According to Tyler Morrison, a junior guard, the team executed its game plan in the face of the loss.

“We believed in our coaches and trusted in each other that no matter what was going on, we would get it done,” shared Morrison. “When we got into overtime, we just kept fighting and laying our bodies on the line and giving it our all for other. We followed the game plan, but it just didn’t come out our way.”

Despite the loss, Guzzardo believes the team can finish the season on a high note.

“Perseverance plays a huge role in this sport,” stated Guzzardo. “We might not have had the success that we have wanted, but you still have to play this game with no regrets because any day could be your last to illness or even injury.”
