Searches for businesses in ‘The Big Event’
For the ninth year in a row, students who are participating in “The Big Event” are on a search for businesses and organizations to volunteer on the designated community service day.
Organized by the Student Government Association, “The Big Event” sponsors students who choose to participate in the cleanup of Hammond.
Richard Davis Jr., president of SGA, expressed the need for these job sites to work with “The Big Event.”
“We are eagerly looking for businesses and community organizations to serve as job sites for this year’s ‘Big Event,'” said Davis. “Students are excited for the opportunity to give back to the community that has provided them with so many opportunities.”
Karley Bordelon, director of traditions for SGA, described the works done by students and groups involved in “The Big Event.”
“For our 2019 ‘Big Event,’ litter removal, painting, landscaping and other activities are the typical jobs handled by hundreds of students who participate in ‘The Big Event’ each year,” described Bordelon. “Our ‘Big Event’ committee will be doing job site checks the first two weeks of March to make sure we have ordered any necessary tools, and to make sure each task and location is safe for students.”
According to Bordelon, more businesses and organizations in Hammond are needed for “The Big Event” this March.
“We are looking for businesses, nonprofits or other organizations in the Hammond or Ponchatoula area to participate as job sites,” explained Bordelon. “Each team of students will be assigned a job site and will complete whatever approved tasks the site may need the day of ‘The Big Event.'”
Bordelon discussed the requirements for a business or organization to join the event.
“Since students provide their own transportation, job sites should be within 25 minutes of the Hammond campus,” shared Bordelon. “Job sites must also have a contact person on location to supervise the work.”
“The Big Event” is scheduled for Saturday, March 30 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A make-up date of April 6 has been reserved to account for any future weather changes.
The deadline for registering a job site is March 1. Davis encouraged sites to register early.
