Students give blood at ‘RHA’s Blood Drive’

Several students and faculty had the opportunity to make a difference by donating blood.

The Residence Hall Association hosted a blood drive outside Friendship Circle on Sept. 9 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The blood drive was organized by Vitalant, a nonprofit organization which organizes blood donation opportunities around the country.

Irma Russell, a donor recruitment representative, explained how the donated blood is used for medical treatment.

Leah Cross, member of RHA, volunteered at the event and explained why she felt the blood drive was important.

“I felt like the best way to contribute to this event since I cannot donate blood was to volunteer and try to get other people to donate,” discussed Cross.

“When you donate blood, many times it is separated into plasma, red blood cells and platelets,” said Russell. “The red blood is for people who need it for surgeries, accidents. Cancer patients and burn victims need plasma and platelets. People who need constant blood transfusions depend on donated blood.”

Maya Weber, president of RHA, shared that last year’s success lead the organization to hold the blood drive again.

“They say that you can save one in three people with your blood, so it is always great to partner with this organization,” said Weber. “RHA is all about giving back to the community, so we want to give back as much as possible not only to the residents but the community of Hammond. You are not only doing a good deed, but you are saving people’s lives and helping people who need blood.”
