Students returning to campus for classes can find a number of opportunities to occupy their spare time.

Every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., students can purchase locally-grown produce and art crafts at the Hammond Farmers Market located at 2 W. Thomas St.

The Miss Southeastern Pageant is hosted later in the fall semester. Since the competition may require much preparation, starting as soon as possible is ideal. The Campus Activities Board helps students start this preparation with the semester’s first interest meeting in Student Union Room 2203 on Sept. 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Further meetings can be found on the university website.

The university will celebrate its 93rd birthday in the Student Union Breezeway on Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students can come out to the festivities between classes.

For music lovers, the Wind Symphony will open its season on Monday, Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Pottle Music Building.

On Sept. 25-28, “Dracula” will take the Vonnie Borden Theatre stage. The play is directed and adapted for stage by James “Jim” Winter, associate professor of acting and directing. Admission is free for students with presentation of their school ID.

The Opera/Music Theatre Workshop will perform at the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts on Sept. 27-28 at 7:30 p.m., and it will feature “Into the Woods” by Stephen Sondheim.

Students can head to the Morrison Alley Parking Lot on Friday, Sept. 28 from 5-9 p.m. for the Hammond Regional Arts Center’s ninth annual “Brews Arts Festival.” The fundraiser will feature local breweries including Gnarly Barley Brewing Co., Bayou Teche Brewing, Southern Craft Brewing, Tin Roof Brewing and Low Road Brewing. Besides brewing, the event will also include live art demonstrations and booths displaying artworks and crafts for sale. Advanced ticket prices are $25 for HRAC members and $30 for non-members, but the price increases to $35 on the day of the event. Tickets can be purchased at the HRAC during normal gallery hours or on HRAC’s website. Attendees must be 21 years old or older and present a valid ID.

On the same day at 6 p.m., Denton Hatcher and Kristen Foster will perform at HRAC as part of the “Playing the Staircase” series. The series features local and regional musicians performing original, acoustic music. Admission is $5.

Between classes or after a day of classes, students can relax and enjoy their spare time with any of the above events.
