Then and now: veterans and World War I
November 11, 2018
Assistant Professor of History Dr. Samantha Cavell discussed the trials and struggles American soldiers faced before and after World War I to wrap up the “Then and Now” lecture series.
The Veterans Day lecture was held on Nov. 7 in Pottle Auditorium from 1-2 p.m.
In the lecture, Cavell discussed the injustice that soldiers faced, the Compensation Act of 1924, the Great Depression and the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944.
“It is a very important and relevant subject that needs to be discussed and understood,” said Cavell. “Some of the struggles war veterans faced back then haven’t really been solved to their full extent today.”
Kaleigh McCullough, a junior social studies education major, shared what she learned form the lecture.
“It helped me understand how mistreated our veterans were back then and how we can learn from their sacrifices and struggles and apply it to today,” said McCullough.
