The jazz ensemble practiced twice a week to put on its first concert of the season.

The jazz ensemble performed in the Pottle Recital Hall on Monday, Oct. 1.

Many of the songs performed included solos from trumpet player Austin Dugas, a senior music major.

“This performance was really hard for the brasses,” said Dugas. “I’ve been so exhausted, and I’ve been out of breath a lot.”

According to Michael Brothers, director of jazz and percussion studies, introducing Brad Walker, saxophonist, as the guest artist the week before the concert was the most difficult part of preparing for the concert.

“The guest performer has to play their role, but the students also need to get a feel of how they play,” said Brothers. “It’s mainly a lot of little things you have to learn about one another.”

The final jazz ensemble concert of the semester is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Pottle Recital Hall.
